VASLA/VALL Networking Dinner at the Blue Goat

A good time was had by all at the Blue Goat on August 13 and no goats were consumed! Thanks to Julie Beamer from the Fourth Circuit Library for organizing these dinners for VASLA and VALL members to meet and find out what is happening in other area libraries.

Welcome to Roger Skalbeck

 On July 1st, Roger V. Skalbeck joined Richmond School of Law as their Associate Dean of Library & Information Resources. 

He comes to Richmond Law from Georgetown Law Center, where he worked for eight years as an associate librarian and co-taught a seminar in Technology Innovation and Law Practice. 

 Prior to working at Georgetown, Roger was the Technology Librarian and Webmaster at George Mason School of Law, where he worked for nearly seven years.

 

Roger is a member of the CALI Board of Directors, former president of the Law Librarians’ Society of Washington, D.C., and former chair of AALL’s Copyright Committee.  He’s also co-host of the Law Librarian Conversations (LawLibCon) podcast, together with Rich Leiter from the University of Nebraska School of Law.

Roger received his J.D. from George Mason University School of Law in 2005, his M.L.I.S. from Dominican University in 1996 and his B.A. from Macalester College in 1993.

He is excited to call Richmond his new home, working as part of the library team in the school’s William Taylor Muse Law Library. 

 

When not at work, he enjoys Euro-style board games, making sushi and exploring the Richmond area with his family.  He also enjoys German music, culture and German language detective novels.

Farewell to Timothy Coggins!

Tim Coggins retired in June from the University of Richmond Law School Library after 18 years of service to the university. And as VALLers are aware he was also awarded AALL's Marian Gould Gallagher Distinguished Service Award in July. That's a fine way to end a distinguished career!

Tim was an active member of the Virginia Library Association and VALL, and we wish him the best as he enjoys beach living!

The article below is from the University of Richmond's Newsroom and is a fitting tribute to Tim for his many years of service:

The American Association of Law Library (AALL) Hall of Fame has announced that it will award the Marian Gould Gallagher Distinguished Service Award, its highest honor, to Timothy Coggins, associate dean for Library & Information Services at Richmond Law.

“This award recognizes an individual who has completed or is nearing completion of an active professional career for ‘outstanding, extended, and sustained service to law librarianship, to the Association, or for contributions to the professional literature,” wrote Frank G. Houdek, chair of the AALL Awards Committee. “Needless to say, Tim Coggins more than qualifies on all counts.”

Coggins joined the Richmond Law team in 1997 as director of the law library and associate professor. He became professor in 2003 and associate dean in 2004. Prior to joining the Richmond Law faculty, Coggins worked at the University of Alabama School of Law and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law.

“Tim is one of the finest library directors in the country and has built a truly outstanding law library for us here,” said Wendy Perdue, dean of the law school. “His commitment to excellence leaves a lasting legacy and he is a model for library directors everywhere.”

As associate dean, Coggins directs the Muse Law Library, a resource center that is home to more than 430,000 volumes. He also teaches legal research courses. Coggins will retire this summer. During his tenure he has led efforts to bolster collections and improve the physical space, all the while managing major shifts in technology and the increasingly seamless integration of library staff into the classroom.

Coggins said he’s very proud of the individuals who work in the library because they are the ones who contribute significantly to make the facility run smoothly.
“I think over the years we’ve been able to add great, new people who come in and work collaboratively with the people who have been here many years to create a very focused, user services group of individuals,” Coggins said. “Our students rate us very high on all kinds of surveys about service.”

Coggins will receive the award at this summer’s AALL Annual Meeting and Conference in Philadelphia. This is not his first honor from the AALL. He has also received four presidential certificates of merit from the organization, and in 2004 was the recipient of the Frederick Hicks Award for outstanding service in academic law librarianship. In 2011, Coggins was inducted into the AALL Hall of Fame.

Hello VALL!

I hope everyone has enjoyed the summer time.   I have some news and a few announcements to share.

VALL at AALL 2015

At the AALL Annual Meeting in Philadelphia this July VALL members gathered for a wonderful lunch at McCormick and Schmick’s.  about 20 members gathered to take a break from the heat and some fellowship with VALL colleagues. VALL members also gathered at Philadelphia’s Reading Terminal Market! 

VALL also had a table in the exhibit hall in the Philadelphia Convention center where we had a chance to talk about the best of VALL with librarians everywhere. 

 

Also at AALL, our Vice President/President Elect Patty Petroccione attended Chapter Leadership Training Session and I attended the Chapter Presidents Annual Business Meeting.  Both were successful and very informative sessions.
